Pearl Care Guide & Authenticity
Are Your Pearls Real? How We Guarantee Authenticity
At Krishna Pearls & Jewellers, we have spent over 43 years building one of Hyderabad's most trusted names in pearl jewellery. Every pearl we sell — whether a simple pair of studs or a five-strand bridal mala — is genuine, hand-selected freshwater or saltwater pearl.
What Makes a Pearl Real?
A real pearl forms inside an oyster or mollusc when an irritant (a grain of sand or a bead nucleus) is coated with layers of nacre — the same iridescent substance that lines the shell. This natural process gives pearls their characteristic lustre, warmth, and weight.
Freshwater Pearls are cultivated in freshwater mussels, primarily in China. They come in a wide range of shapes, sizes, and natural colours — white, cream, pink, peach, lavender, and black. These make up the majority of our collection.
Tahitian Pearls are saltwater pearls cultivated in French Polynesia, known for their natural dark grey, green, and peacock hues. We stock a select range of genuine Tahitian pearls.
South Sea Pearls are among the world's rarest and most valuable pearls, cultivated in the warm waters of Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Available at our Punjagutta and Kondapur stores.
The Simple Home Test for Real Pearls
Not sure if your pearls are real? Try the tooth test — the oldest and most reliable method:
- Gently rub the pearl surface against the edge of your front tooth.
- Real pearls feel slightly gritty or sandy — this is the texture of natural nacre layers.
- Fake or plastic pearls feel smooth and slippery.
This happens because real nacre is made of microscopic aragonite crystals stacked in layers, giving it a natural friction. Imitation pearls are coated with a smooth paint or resin that has no such texture.
Note: The tooth test works for both cultured and natural pearls — both are real. It distinguishes genuine nacre from plastic or glass imitations.
How to Care for Your Pearls
Pearls are organic gems — unlike diamonds or rubies, they are alive in a sense, and they respond to how they are treated. Follow these simple steps to keep your pearls lustrous for generations.
Daily Wear Tips
- Put pearls on last. Always apply perfume, hairspray, and makeup before wearing your pearls. Chemicals in cosmetics can dull the surface over time.
- Wipe after wearing. After each use, gently wipe your pearls with a soft, dry cloth — a microfibre or lint-free cloth works best. This removes skin oils, sweat, and dust that accumulate during the day.
- Do not wear while swimming or bathing. Chlorine, salt water, and soap can weaken the silk thread that strings the pearls and damage the nacre surface.
- Avoid ultrasonic cleaners. Unlike diamonds, pearls should never be cleaned in ultrasonic jewellery cleaners. The vibration can crack the nacre.
Cleaning Your Pearls
- Dampen a soft cloth very slightly with lukewarm water.
- Wipe each pearl gently. Do not soak or submerge.
- Allow to dry completely before storing — never store damp pearls as this can weaken the string.
- For a deeper clean, bring your pearls to any Krishna Pearls & Jewellers store. We offer complimentary cleaning and restringing checks for all pearls purchased with us.
Storing Your Pearls
- Store pearls separately from other jewellery. Harder gems like diamonds and rubies can scratch the soft nacre surface.
- Use a soft pouch or a lined jewellery box. A velvet or silk pouch is ideal.
- Avoid airtight containers — pearls benefit from slight humidity. Storing them in a sealed box for long periods can cause them to dry out and crack.
- Do not store in direct sunlight or near a heat source.
Restringing
If you wear your pearl string regularly, have it restrung every 1–2 years. The silk thread between pearls can stretch and weaken over time. At Krishna Pearls & Jewellers, we offer professional restringing services at all our Hyderabad locations.
Pearl Grading — What to Look For
When buying pearls, five factors determine quality and value:
| Factor | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Lustre | The depth and brilliance of light reflected from the surface. High-lustre pearls appear almost mirror-like. |
| Surface | How clean and smooth the pearl's surface is. Minor blemishes are natural; fewer means higher grade. |
| Shape | Round pearls are rarest and most valuable. Baroque (irregular) shapes have their own organic charm. |
| Size | Measured in millimetres. Larger pearls take longer to form and are generally more valuable. |
| Colour | A matter of preference. White and cream are classic; overtones of rose, green, or silver add value. |
At Krishna Pearls & Jewellers, every pearl in our collection is individually assessed before it reaches our shelves. We source directly from trusted cultivators to ensure consistent quality across all price points.
